WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING

When Irish Eyes are Smiling Of Ireland Irish Heritage Ireland elegantlyhandmade by Melissa elegatnlyhandmade.wordpress.com

Hello, I am Melissa O’Connor (Maiden name), and there is more Irish about me than just my name it is indeed running strongly through my veins. O’Connor is from my father, and we are predominantly Irish with a very interesting family history that takes us on a long journey from a doctor in the United States in the 1840’s to his adopted family in England, then on to our family roots in Ireland. Also, with the last name Yates on my mom’s side, this adds even more Irish to my heritage.

WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING

When Irish Eyes are Smiling sure it’s like a morn in spring
In the lilt of Irish laughter you can hear the angels sing
when Irish hearts are happy all the world seems bright and gay
but when Irish eyes are smiling sure they’ll steal your heart away

Dan & Melissa

There’s a tear in your eye and I’m wondering why
that it ever should be there at all
with such power in your smile sure a stone you’d beguile
and there’s never a teardrop should fall
when your sweet lilting laughter’s like some fairy song
and your eyes sparkle bright as can be
Oh then laugh all the while and all other times smile
and then smile a smile for me

Chorus…
For your smile is a part of the love in your heart,
And it makes even sunshine more bright.
Like the linnet’s sweet song, crooning all the day long,
Comes your laughter and light for the springtime of life
Is the sweetest of all
There is ne’er a real care or regret; ad while springtime is ours
Throughout all of youth’s hours, let us smile each chance we get.

~ let us smile each chance we get!

Secrets Of Ireland…..

Roan Inish Of Ireland Folklore selkies donegal county Ireland A Sketchbook of Ireland in photographs Traditional Irish Foods Tea St patricks day celebrations recipes elegantlyhandmade.wordpress.com

There are many Secrets Of  Ireland she  also has many folklore stories, a strong history…… beautiful landscapes and seashore. And let’s not forget the perfect “cuppha tae” and  delicious foods such as buttermilk scones to go with todays movie.

THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH

Fiona  is a young Irish girl with an unusual family history, including a long-missing baby brother. When she goes to live with her grandparents on the west coast of Ireland, Fiona hears stories about her ancestors, tales that involve mythical creatures called selkies who can shift from seal to human form. After Fiona ends up on the small island of Roan Inish, her family’s ancestral home, she believes she may have found her little brother living by the sea.

“The east is our future, and the west is our past,” Fiona’s God-fearing grandmother (Eileen Colgan) declares. But the old island draws Fiona to it, even though her inquiries make her elders nervous. Before long, the girl is poking around on Roan Inish, accompanied by a 13-year-old cousin, Eamon (Richard Sheridan). One day she spies a naked wild child in a field, picking flowers. But when she cries out her lost brother’s name, the little boy runs off to a tiny boat-shaped cradle and paddles out to sea.

Fiona’s  grandfather  tells her of a Conneelly ancestor who fought the British to defend the Irish language. Then her dark-haired cousin Tadhg tells her about the forebear who fell in love with a “selkie” .  He fathered a brood with her before she returned to her marine-mammal form.

Roan Inish Of Ireland Folklore selkies donegal county Ireland A Sketchbook of Ireland in photographs Traditional Irish Foods Tea St patricks day celebrations recipes elegantlyhandmade.wordpress.com

Selkies are said to live as seal in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land.

Here is a small clip of the beginning of the movie. I own this movie and enjoy it very much through out the year and well worth the small fee some are  charging to watch the full length movie  on-line.

“The Secret of Roan Inish” freely mixes Celtic myth and everyday reality.  Its focus is not so much on the collision of modern life with traditional ways as on a private journey to discover roots – of family history, geography and ties to nature.

BIRD NOTES

Sing a song of Spring Birds flowers gardens seagull Natures beauty

We have been enjoying the early morning blissful song of our resident cardinal couple. They have welcomed some fledgling to their family. I love the fact that cardinals mate for life!

More bird notes:

We’ve delighted in observing two doves nesting in the corners of our car port and raise their little baby to fledglings. One bird of note is that  a mocking-bird has nested in a tree where Lady Mitzy and I take her morning promenade and has it has not been very welcoming! I think it was using naughty bird language at us – Lol.  All of the our baby birds have now fled the nest – sigh! That happens quick in the bird world.  We had a visit from a crow, he sat upon on back yard fence giving us his cawing crow opinion. Now I have to say I think I have been mistaking back birds for crows as he was quite large, and loud and for the duration of his visit he proceeded to exasperate the nesting mocking birds. I  think we were witness bird duel in the air as the mocking – bird chased the crow they would then reverse the chase – this was quite a site

VIOLET NOTES:

I do believe that Mary Mason Campbell was speaking of wild violets. But my African violets do give me great pleasure, they have been quite happy this year and have been delighting me with four consecutive sessions of blooms……. which makes up for their lack of scent –  that and their lush velvety leaves!

I did try to grow wild violet from seed without success – this time!

Basil – I keep basil growing year round in my Tasha Tudor Style, patio herb garden.

Basil has been a kitchen garden herb for centuries. It was once used for “strewing” about the floors to keep them sweet and clean: for chasing away witches, flies and headaches. In Italy it is a symbol of love and fidelity!

Have you started your herb garden? Do you grow your herbs from seed or do you purchase starts / plants? I do start some from seeds and buy some potted herbs. My local grocery store carries very healthy looking herbs in pots in the produce section. I have had great success with them!

Fair- Maids of February

FEBRUARY ~ from ‘The Country Diary Of An Edwardian Lady’

~One month is past , another has begun…..Hartley Coleridge

~ February bring no rain ‘Tis neither good for grass nor grain.

~ “In February, if thou hearest thunder,Thou shalt see a summer wonder”

~’ If Candlemas Day be fair & bright –  Winter will have another flight – But if Candlemas Day be clouds & rain – Winter is gone & will not come again.’

How was your Candlemas Day / Groundhog day? It was indeed fair & bright here and today we are having a little bit more winter like weather –  cool and rainy. Perfect weather for knitting and drinking tea.

Solitary firstling,
Coming in the cold time,
Prophet of the gay time,

Many, many welcomes,
February fair-maid!     ~ Lord Alfred Tennysen

Speaking of flowers…. some say the violet is the birth flower of February. According to ‘The New England Butt’ry Shelf Almanac’ the birthstone is Amethyst and the flower is Amaranth!?   Hmm, now I have heard of Amaranth as bird seed and even a health food and flour alternative but not as a flower representing a month of the year.

It is said that the ancient gods wore wreaths of it ; and Milton in his Paradise Lost crowns angels with it. Its meaning to the ancients was Immortality or Unfading Love.  ~ “The New England Butt’ry Shelf Almanac”

Amaranth Flower

Amaranth Flower

A quick google search led me here; http://flowerinfo.org/amaranth-flowers

The amaranth flower is a genus of roughly 60 species, which are all considered cosmopolitan. These annual herbs, which are native to North and South America, can grow between 1 to 6 feet in height, and are thought to be very long-lasting plants. This flower, which is a member of the amaranthaceae family and amaranthoideae subfamily, is made up of a small inflorescence which blossoms from an either drooping or erect spike. Their colors range from the well-known crimson red, to purple and even golden hues. Amaranth are thought to be very hardy plants which are resistant to most diseases; however, they are susceptible to frost, and are best grown in warmer weather.

The amaranth flower is one of the most useful blossoms around. These plants are not only loved for their ornamental applications, but also for their use as a food source, dye and medicine……

Who Hath Despised The Day OF Small Things?

As violets so be I recluse and sweet,
Cheerful as daisies unaccounted rare,
Still sunward-gazing from a lowly seat,

While lofty forest trees tower bleak and bare,
Daisies and violets own remotest heat
And bloom and make them fair.
